#56 – Singham

Movie पढ़ाकू,

Last week we watched Singham. We had to read some of it, so you know it was Erskine’s pick.
Lets describe the movie. But first you have to imagine that epic music is playing all around you and they lyrics all sound like gibberish except every 2 minutes you hear Singham! Singham! Singham!

Ok, so Birbiglia Singham is a 42 year old police officer that lives at home with his parents in a small Indian village. He stands for truth, justice and the Indian way. Unlike most Indian cops, he is unbribable! He solves the conflicts with the villagers by just telling them to ‘stop bickering or daddy’s gonna take off the belt’. He meets the daughter of local punching bag Gotya and while she initially dislikes him, she’s leaving snail trails all around in no time. At some point there’s a big awesome fight, for reasons.

Singham!

Comically Corrupt villain man Jaikant makes an appearance, he’s the worst. I had to look this up later, but apparently Singham tries to make him come to the small village to sign paperwork every two weeks. The paperwork is because he was given bail for a murder he committed. I don’t know if bail means the same thing in India, but in ‘Merica that means he still has to stand trial for murder.

Singham!

So the movie is over right? Nope, Not even close.
Singham is transferred to Goa, the seat of power of Bad Guy Jaikant. He uses his connections and corrupt officers to torment Singham. Trying to break his spirit with his maniacal repeating of “Welcome to Goa, Singham”. What a ballbreaker. Singham is down and wants to quit, but suddenly realizes, ‘Hey I’m not a little bitch’ and convinces the police of Goa to fight with him. At some point in here there is a crazy awesome fight with Singham stepping out of a drifting car and laying the belt buckle down on a couple guys.
Movie over yet?

Singham!

So, in the end… ish. Singham convinces all the cops to go to Jaikant’s house to get him. But he escapes and leads them on a Mr. Bean style chase all over town. When they eventually catch him and bring him back to the police station they book him for corruption and put him in jail right? NOPE! THEY FUCKING SHOOT HIM IN THE FACE. That’s right, Singham straight up murders this fucker. You can’t trust the corrupt Indian law system, the only thing an honest cop can do, is seek brutal vengeance.

Singham?

So I left out the beginning part about the cop that killed himself cause Jaikant had him set up on corruption charges. The part where Singham falls in love with Gotya’s smoking hot daughter and has a 5 minute Beauty and the Beast style music video that we all sat through holding back tears of joy because of how beautiful it was. How they get engaged without every having touched hands because if she kissed a man on film the actress would bring shame to her family for generations.

singham.

Is this the longest email I’ve ever written? Maybe.

142 minutes, TWO HOURS AND 22 Minutes!

it’s kind of worth it, but it’s like 2 full movies.  you can really just fast forward to the fights and music.

Singham Facts:

  • Box Office: 1.4 Billion! —–rupees.  (US$21 million)
  • Sequel:(2014) Singham Returns
  • Those beeped out places in the dialog:Singham had been removed from cinemas in Karnataka while some cinemas had cancelled the shows following pressure from various groups protesting against derogatory statements against the Kannadigas. Various organisations raised voices against the anti-Kannadiga dialogues in Singham and the film which was released faced problems in continuing with the shows. There was a demand to remove such scenes from the film and the filmmakers contemplated on the next course of action. Singham commenced in Karnataka after the removal of some “objectionable” dialogues, a day after disruptions in its screening.
