#59 – Gymkata

Movie Katas,

Last week on the illustrious movie night we watched the weird 80’s classic “Gymkata”. The skill of gymnastics, the Kill of Karate!

Which follows in the grand 80’s tradition of hiring a star with one specific skill and this time it’s not acting!
So the plot of this movie has all of the 80’s cliches. Secret agent Dad killed in action, world champion athlete son, training montage, sex montage, seducing a woman by doing sarcastic backflips.

He’s recruited by the US government because we need to put a Starwars satellite station in the country of Parmestan. Im not sure that they know how satellites work. The Parmesians hate Americans, but what they love is cold blooded ninja killing action. They have something they call ‘THE GAME’ where they grant the winner of Parmesian Ninja Warrior one wish. They mention that no outsider has ever won the game, which makes sense. But what did the local winner ask for? Is that how we got the King?

I wish I had the energy to recap the dumb plot in more detail. But its just so dumb.

  • Why is Zartan just cheating and shooting the guys with arrows?
  • What’s the point of the obstacle coarse if they’re just going to snipe them off ropes?
  • How do those crazy people survive in that village?
  • WHY DO THEY RUN INTO HIS FEET!

In the end he… wins? The girl falls for him, her father approves, he kills? her arranged husband?  He swings, he spins, he kicks faces in slow motion.

Are we better off having seen this movie? Yes!
