Movie grunts,
So last week we had an elite squad consisting of Charlie, Chris J., Billy D., a brief showing of Mark as “Guest” accompanied by a fluffy white bunny avatar and of course yours truly. This dedicated few braved the viewing of a movie selection that came way out of left-field from Charlie. He upped the ante on his usual choice of either tomato themed horror movies or comedically twisted zombie flicks, to bless us with a zombie apocalypse themed action horror comedy.
Come to think of it now that I actually read that last sentence I’m not surprised on the choice what so ever. This movie is kind of hard to place for me. It wasn’t extremely terrible but I couldn’t help but experience a feeling of exclusion when it came to many of the movies running themes.
First of all I guess I’ll have to give you some back story that I learned from Wiki. The cast was pretty much entirely made up of military vets, 75% according to IMDb. I think the whole premise of this movie came about from inspiration of the poor portrayal of the military in many Hollywood produced films. These issues range from one-dimensional clichéd characters to inaccuracies in uniforms and use of weapons. I feel like this vision is sort of short-sighted and kind of the reason why this movie could’ve been better with a little more actual effort because what is executed is nothing more than a slapstick dick joke infused 90 minute romp with 2nd amendment political commentary sprinkled in.
Some of the references and humor I got simply because I am around a lot of military personnel daily but the majority of it seemed like if you weren’t in the service your just lost in a lot of the dialog. Chris J. was really useful in closing these gaping holes for us pansies but the old adage of if you have to explain a joke then it isn’t funny was appropriate here. It didn’t happen often but there was one exchange of dialog that Chris J. was totally ROTFL and the rest of us were just completely silent. Chris J. I would like to thank you again for your service.
With those negatives aside the rest was pretty good. SGM Gene Vandenham was the best thing to happen to this movie for me. His voice, mannerisms, and hilarious one-liners were spectacular and proved to be a breath of fresh air. Pretty much all of the comedy before him teetered on the edge of not funny and just OK but when he is introduced, this movie really takes off.
Gene Vandenham is the greatest military hero of all time.
Chris
Hot babes are always a positive and there were a couple that eventually join the cast. The violence and special effects were enjoyable as well.
It’s Shibbs’ turn this week. I’ll post my screen shots when I get home later this evening. See you all tomorrow night.
RANDOM FACTS:
- The movie is a collaboration between the veteran-run military themed apparel companies, Ranger Up and Article 15 Clothing, and stars many of their staff members. This explains the t-shirts the cast was wearing, “Red, White & Pew” was probably my favorite.
- The movie was produced and directed by Ross Patterson, better known as SGM Gene Vandenham.
- Range 15 is the 4th highest crowd sourced film on Indiegogo.
