#77 – The Ice Pirates

Movie Pirates,

We did it again, another loop around the list. We were firmly in the grasp of the Nostalgia Bill’s with this pick. Ice Pirates from 1984! Which I discovered in a video store sometime in the mid 90’s I remember thinking, hey, this is fun! and then instantly forgot it existed for 20 years.

Which is pretty much what the reviews said about it.

It has a 9% on RT, NINE! damn.

one review quote: Bring along low expectations and a forgiving attitude, and The Ice Pirates goes down painlessly enough.

But I thought it actually improved with age. The robot effects were shitty, but after 30 years they’re comically shitty. The whole plot is kind of by the numbers. Actually this time I picked up more on the ‘classes’ of characters (templars, pirates, royals?). The characters are pretty likable, the supporting cast has had way better careers than the stars. Well maybe just Ron Perlman and Anjelica Houston.

Thoughts.

  • this movie would have crushed bingo (swords, lazers, and comedy)
  • how DID they keep that ice frozen
  • the ageing fight at the end, still my favorite bit.
  • Space Herps!
  • Ron Perlman gay chef, now my least favorite bit.

If anyone can make it this week, Let me know. I have tons of stuff to do around the house before we leave next week…
