#88 – G.I. Joe: The Movie

Movie Joes,

Last week we revisited a piece of 80’s history. GI JOE : The Movie. Apparently not released in theaters after the failure of My Little Pony and Transformers : Movie Film for Theaters. And Duke didn’t die, because everyone freaked out at Optimus dying in Transformers. Which I can totally see how they changed it because.. he died, then they just said… he’s in a coma.
Any HOOOOOOO.

Recap!

Like most kids shows I had no idea how complicated the plot could get. I assumed it was all Cobra is evil and Joe is America. But apparently this is all about he creation and control of BET. Robert Johnson is no where to be found! Just another case of stealing the art from the black man. So the Joes create BET, but instantly cobra wants to use the power of 106 and Park to terraform the earth so that a race of snake people can take over.

Pew Pew lasers!

Explosions, RETREAT!, training montage, Snake man people, Cartoon Butts, Pew Pew, Weird alien snakes, tanks, explosions, jets, explosions, lasers, snakes, blinded Avalanche lost in the snow subplot, attack base, lasers, explosions, giant bugs, explosions, escape, use the BET to stop the alien spores, Duke’s out of the coma, Yo Joe!

I had this movie on VHS

Q

Thoughts.

  • The animation in the beginning is actually pretty complex
  • I don’t remember any of the Cobra-La people
  • Chris J knows wayyyyy to much about GI Joe.
  • There were some funny quotes that I have forgotten.

I’m in VA this week, probably down at my parents in Stafford. But I could be talked into some IRL movie night on Thursday if anyone is up for it.

G.I. Joe: The Movie (also known as Action Force: The Movie in the UK) is a 1987 animated action-adventure film produced as a spin-off from the animated series G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero, based on the original Hasbro toyline.[2] It was produced by Sunbow Productions and Marvel Productions and was animated in Japan by Toei Animation Co., Ltd.

Created at the height of the G.I. Joe craze in the 1980s, G.I. Joe: The Movie was intended as a theatrical release to be closely followed by The Transformers: The Movie. However, the G.I. Joe film encountered unexpected production delays which allowed the Transformers feature to be released first. Due to the poor box office performances of The Transformers: The Movie and My Little Pony: The MovieG.I. Joe: The Movie was instead released direct-to-video as well as aired on television in syndication, first in feature-length format[citation needed] and later split into a five-part miniseries format as part of the series' syndication package.
