#116 – Fatman

Movie Kringles,

Last week we watched a festive holiday film, Fatman. Where Mel Gibson plays a down on his luck Santa, forced to manufacture parts for US government spy satellites all while being stalked by a hitman sent by a spoiled rich kid.
Now this premise seems very wacky, but the movie is surprisingly subtle. Everything about the ‘north pole’ location seems legit. Santa lives in a quiet small town and tries to make ends meet delivering toys. I’m not really sure how he’s getting paid to do that? are they running on Christmas cheer? Is this the plot of The Santa Clause 3…

I would say that everyone in this movie is trying very hard. Gibson makes a mean Santa, but one you kind of want to root for. Who looks out for his elves, but also lays the pipe to Mrs. Claus. Walton Goggins as the hitman is great. I’m not totally sure of his backstory… he seems to collect Santa related stuff because he didn’t get what he wanted as a kid. But is also being paid by the rich kid, I think he would do this one for free. Mrs Claus is very good and brings some sweetness to the movie that I didn’t expect.

It was just a good movie.. I expected a wacky sendup and what we got was a nice little film. about the dumbest parts where when the hitman was just rolling through countless US army guards without them getting off a shot. I know, like storm troopers they are independent contractors who are aware of the risks, but this seems unnecessary. Maybe if they made them blackwater mercenaries I would feel better.

Good movie! Who knew!

I’m up again for this week (Wednesday) if anyone else has a pick shout it out.
