#125 – Monster Hunter

Movie Hunters,

A movie that seemed like a generic romp of monster stuff and action. But later we realized that it’s based on a video game series that none of us had never heard of. But hey! We’re getting old! Still, enjoyed it

The movie starts out with a bad-ass Army Ranger team heading into the desert wondering where the Alpha team went. They cross by some ancient ruins and then are caught in a lightning-sandstorm and transported Wizard of Oz style into… well Oz i guess.

They seem pretty compitent and have a bunch of big guns so when they encounter a gaint… REALLY GAINT… horned monster that chases them around you think that they are gonna be ok. They are not ok. A bunch of them are killed and they are chased into a monster spider hole. Their cool miniguns and large caliber sniper rifles are usless against the monsters. Which is kind of a bummer because I think the movie I was looking for was these Rangers learning how to use new weapons against the huge dinosaurs.

She survives and meets a local. Did I mention that while setting up the Discord video call I forgot to share the screen for a good 5 minutes and Charlie didn’t think we had started yet. I guess he thought we were just sitting there on a video call in silence. So I’m the only one who caught the beginning of this movie. So what I think happened was there was some kind of sand boat crash and part of the team had been stranded on a rock.

This is one of those increasingly convenient plot choices that lead this movie to its inevitable video game conclusion.

For some reason I feel bad going through the plot beat by beat for a recent movie. Maybe it’s something about spoilers or possibly because while some cool things happen in this movie, there’s really nothing to make jokes about. Also I didn’t take notes so I’ll just try to remember ANYTHING that happened.

Once the local guy takes her hostage, he ties her up, but they dont speak the same language so they can’t communicate. But they do that dumb movie thing where she excapes and fights him in his fort for a while until they realize that they can work together to get out of there. But this all goes on WAY TOO LONG and it’s clear that he’s barely surviving there, so you think that he wouldn’t be such an asshole about it. We dont know anything about this world and we havent seen any bad guys yet. (or ever?) so why doesnt he just welcome anybody in to help him? dunno, for ACTION REASONS!

They decide that they can work together! It’s not clear how they decide this, cause they dont speak the same language. Bond over shared love of chocolate I guess. Also Ive watched this scene twice and I’m still not sure of the actual plan. They train with the bone swords and ancient armor and cool wrist grappling hook thing. But I think their plan is to launch a bunch of barrels really far away and make a run for it. Cool montage, but stupid plan. Because it breaks down right away and she gets back to her flipped hummer and uses the minigun to… do nothing… because that shit didn’t work the first time. SO WHY DO YOU THINK IT WOULD WORK THIS TIME. But eventually she realizes that the only way she can beat this thing is to grappling hook right onto the monsters head and drive a 5ft sword into its brain. for ACTION REASONS AGAIN!

They make it to an oasis where they meet some herbivore monsters, WORLD BUILDING! Then at night there is a stampede of these nice dinosaurs, but at the last minute Ron Perlman shows up and saves them by waving flaming swords around, Mila joins in and they have a flaming sword party. It’s a pretty cool action scene, but at the end he punches her in the face and knocks her out. She is locked up in a cage, you think that Tony Jaa could have stuck up for her, but NOOOOOOO. Anyway she escapes and no one cares anyway and Ron Perlman tells her the whole plan. PLOT REASONS!

So their plan is ATTACK THE TOWER. The reason it something about people from our world coming over and fucking shit up? or possibly that whoever built the gate guards it with monsters and then lost control of them.

IDK, this should be the start of some awesome sequence where they have to fight to the top of the tower. But instead the whole team walks up all badass to the bottom and the dragon flies down. It’s admittedly great looking. But the whole plan is JUST FUCKING RUN RIGHT AT THE DRAGON! FUUUUUUUUCCKKKKK ITTTTTTTTT! Does the whole team fight and have some badass moves?! FUUUUUUCCKKK NOOOOOOOOO! Mila just runs in all spinny and gives the dragon a manicure. Then while it’s distracted she falls off a cliff and into the portal to our world.

game over.

Roll the credits.

Nope, syke! The dragon followed her into our world and procedes to Wreck a whole battalion of tanks and planes. Now you might question why a search misson has multiple tanks and a radar 747 but ACTION REASONS! Once again she has to face down the dragon one on one, cause a fucking tank didn’t work, fucking helicopters and ospreys didnt work. BUT IM GONNA SLIDE DOWN YOUR WING WITH A DAGGER!

She eventually lights some kind of grenade? or something, and throws it directly into the dragons mouth! But you cant fight fire with fire and the dragon comes back. But then Tony Jaa appears out of nowhere and shoots exploding arrows into his neck hole, blowing him up again. But… no but this time. he dead.

they decide that their work isn’t done and they need to go back and close the portal because neither world will be safe!

  • I think they wanted to make that sweet “international box office” money, cause they never explain anything. What technology? What people? How do they know english? Why dont guns work? Why do exploding arrows work but not Rocket Propelled Grenades.
  • This movie looks great, except for all the character designs, which are straight up anime garbage
  • I guess “you have to turn off your brain” MAN! But damn, besides action there is the thinnest of plot in this movie.
  • I dont hate this movie. If this was played on TBS on saturday afternoon, then i would watch it.
