#47 – Gremlins 2 : The New Batch

Movie Gremlins,

Last Last Week we watched 1990’s Gremlin’s 2 : The New Batch. It totally held up! In that I mean it was never very good to begin with but the creature effects still looked great.

I did actually read this article. Why Gremlins 2 is better than the original It’s theory is that you don’t remember the first two thirds of Gremlins anyway. All you remember is that they go crazy on everyone end up attacking Billy’s mom in the kitchen, end up in the blender, the microwave and being knifed to death. Then they sing Christmas carols and kill the next door neighbor, end up singing along with snow white in the seven dwarfs and one of them has his face melted off in a fountain.

So… what was the point of all that sentimentality anyway? Why not just loose that home spun bullshit and amp up the mayhem? Well that’s what you got here. It makes jokes about the (cash grab, throw anything in there) nature of sequels and even the emotional core of the first movie (phoebe cates starts a terrible thing that happened to her-story about presidents day, instead of christmas, they cut her short)

I give credit to G2 for not pretending to be a PG family movie, then burning frightening images into a young Mark’s brain so that he has to turn off the lights at the bottom of the stairs and then run as fast as he can to the top SO THE GOD DAMN GREMLINS WONT GET HIM…. until way to late into high school.

If you want family friendly wacky mayhem, G2 is the best.

Next movie will be /was Star Crash but I only saw half of it, so I’m not qualified to write the review.

Gremlins 2: The New Batch is a 1990 American comedy horror film, and the sequel to the 1984 film Gremlins. It was directed by Joe Dante and written by Charles S. Haas, with creature designs by Rick BakerZach GalliganPhoebe CatesDick MillerJackie Joseph, and Keye Luke reprise their roles from the first film. New cast members include John GloverRobert ProskyHaviland MorrisRobert Picardo, and Christopher Lee; additionally, the film features Tony Randall providing the voice for one of the gremlins. The story continues the adventures of the creature Gizmo (once again voiced by Howie Mandel), who spawns numerous small monsters when wet. In the first film, Gizmo's offspring rampaged through a small fictional town. In Gremlins 2: The New Batch, Gizmo multiplies within a skyscraper in New York City. The new creatures thus pose a serious threat to the city should they be able to leave the building, and much of the story involves the human characters' efforts to prevent this disaster.

Like the first film, Gremlins 2: The New Batch is a live-action horror comedy film; however, Dante put effort into taking the sequel in new anarchistic directions. The film is meant to be more cartoon-like and less dark than the original, with slapstick violence, so the film received a PG-13 rating by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). There are also a number of parodies of other films and stories, including Gremlins itself, the Rambo films, The Wizard of OzMarathon Man and The Phantom of the Opera.
