Movie Night Survivors, This week we watched… THINGS… a 1989 no budget Z-grade Canadian horror film made by trailer park residents in between walks to the Zippy mart for packs of smokes. It brought us to our collective knees and made some question the 0 ratings they gave to ‘A Talking Cat?!’ and ‘Manborg’. Was it enough to kill movie night forever?
Movie Truckers, So last week we went way back to 1986 when Emilio Estevez was a legitimate star and a coked up Steven King was directing a movie about sentient trucks. I remember this movie being frightening, I swear it was frightening… damn times have changed.
In the interest of Completion I’m writing some sort of recap for the last week we watched a movie. Cote was trying to pick “Mil Mascaras and the Aztec Mummy” but we couldn’t find a stream of it. So We settled on “Cemetery Man” a 1994 Italian movie that Bill Erskine recommended. (Dun Dun Dummmmmm)
All right movie chums. Last Thursday night, Bill, Bill, Charlie, and I watched Soldier (1998). A movie that 22 year old Chris Johnson really enjoyed at the time of its release, and still enjoys to this day. Kurt Russell plays the lead hero and probably says 50 words in the entire movie. But the little that he does say, to me it makes his words more poignant. You really get a sense of how he is feeling in that even though he was essentially bred to be who he was, it wasn’t that he ever had the choice.
Movie Nerds, Last week we finally got around to watching another forgotten Cannon Gem from the 80’s. “Number one with a Bullet”. A hard boiled cop thriller with a conspiracy that goes ALL THE WAY TO THE TOP. We initially assumed that Billy D WIlliams was going to be the star of this film, but we were mistaken it’s ‘Revenge of the Nerds’ star Robert Carradine doing his best BAD BOY COP WHO PLAYS BY HIS OWN RULES. But he pretty much just sounds like a whiney jerk the whole time.
Movie Naked Vampires, Another Cannon masterpiece of 1980’s schlock. This movie is a little bit of everything, star wars, alien, zombies, vampires, poltergeist, young patrick stewart, BEWBS, loads of SWEET BEWBS. What started out as an attempt to screenshot all these sweet boobs turned into me trying to explain in image form why these people were screaming at each others faces and then running around London.
Movie Pirates, We did it again, another loop around the list. We were firmly in the grasp of the Nostalgia Bill’s with this pick. Ice Pirates from 1984! Which I discovered in a video store sometime in the mid 90’s I remember thinking, hey, this is fun! and then instantly forgot it existed for 20 years.
Movie Drivers, Last week we watched Death Race 2050… man I don’t remember anything great about this movie. I think it’s one of those horror comedy sequels that once had some kind of subversive message in the 70’s but that has been lost with each generation. This isn’t a sequel to Death Race… or Death Race 2… or Death Race 3 : Inferno. It’s a true sequel to Death Race 2000 from 1975. and it’s got that same ‘murder is funny’ / ‘fans of this race being suicidal weirdos’ thing that never makes sense in any movie.
Movie Killbots, Last week we rode a wave of 80’s nostalgia, guided by our overlords at ‘How Did This Get Made’ and watched ‘CHOPPING MALL’
Movie Desert Warriors, Last week Q picked a movie from the catalog of forgotten 80’s knockoffs and it did not disappoint. Stryker from 1983 is a movie that combines some (the best?) parts of Star Wars, Mad Max, Flash Gordon, A boy and his Dog, and just about any other 80’s sci-fi fantasy.
